Extended Access
The Extended Access Service is an extension of your usual primary care service. It makes it easier for you to get a consultation at a time that suits you, this includes evenings and weekends.
This service offers consultations at times over and above those currently available, including on weekdays until 8pm and also some consultations on Saturdays and Sundays. Please see the timings below. All Extended Access consultations are pre-bookable, routine primary care consultations with a range of clinicians including GPs, nurses and health care assistants.
This is not a walk-in service – you must book a consultation through the reception team at the University Medical Practice, in the usual way.
Where will my appointment take place?
For all our patients registered with us, the extended access consultations will be at;
Burbury Medical Centre
311 Burbury Street
Birmingham
West Midlands
B19 1TT
Cavendish Medical Practice
Summerfield Primary Care Centre
134 Heath Street
Birmingham
B18 7AL
Who would benefit from this service?
All currently registered patients who reside within our catchment can access these additional slots. If you:
- find it difficult to attend a consultation during the working day
- are a busy parent with small children
- or rely on working carers to take you to consultations
The SDS MyHealthcare Extended Access Service eases the pressure on:
- GP Practices
- A&E Departments and Walk-In Centres
- Secondary Care
When will the Extended Access Service be available?
The service is available now.
How can I book?
Contact the practice in the usual way and request a consultation. If one in the extended access service is available, you'll be able to book this if this is more convenient for you.
What can I be seen for?
A GP Extended Access consultation is exactly like one at your own GP practice. You can discuss any aspect of your healthcare with the GP or nurse that you see.
Will I see my own GP and/or nurse?
Not necessarily. You will be seen by an experienced GP or nurse, but it is unlikely that you will be seen by your own GP or nurse. If you prefer to see your usual GP or practice nurse, please book a consultation with Al Shafa Medical Centre during our normal opening hours.
Will the Clinician I see have access to my medical record during my consultation?
Your medical record will, with your consent, be available to the GP or nurse that sees you, to ensure that they have the information they need to give you the best possible care. A record of this consultation will be sent back to your own GP practice electronically to ensure that your GP medical record is kept up-to-date. A consultation with this service will be just like one at this practice.
What about patient records?
Hub GPs have access to the patient’s full medical record, as long as the patient gives his or her consent. This means that they can receive personal GP care.
I have opted out of Your Care Connect. Can I get an appointment?
Unfortunately not. We’re unable to see patients who have opted out of sharing their medical records.
Practice Nurse & Health Care Assistants
With this SDS MyHealthcare service, you can use the extended access facility to both Practice Nurses and HCAs. Practice Nurses and HCAs are available for face-to-face consultations at the Hubs.
